Stick-slip behavior of a clayey crustal fault

چکیده

Recent studies have revealed that slip on clay-rich fault planes, which develop in the shallow crust and can cause huge earthquakes, is controlled by their flow properties rather than frictional properties. Here, we simulate a seismogenic crustal show such plane may behave as thixotropic yield stress fluid. We then conduct numerical experiments using simple spring-slider model incorporates this property, successfully reproduce spontaneous stick-slip behaviors correspond to variety of processes, ranging from regular earthquakes with high rates slow lower rates. This finding suggests seismic activity be governed time-evolving microstructure clay-water system exists along plane.

Torsional stick-slip behavior in WS2 nanotubes.

We experimentally observed atomic-scale torsional stick-slip behavior in individual nanotubes of tungsten disulfide (WS2). When an external torque is applied to a WS2 nanotube, all its walls initially stick and twist together, until a critical torsion angle, at which the outer wall slips and twists around the inner walls, further undergoing a series of stick-slip torque oscillations. We present...

Stick–slip behavior of ice streams: modeling investigations

A puzzling phenomenon of ice-stream flow is the stick–slip motion displayed by Whillans Ice Stream (WIS), West Antarctica. In this study we test the hypothesis that the WIS stick–slip motion has features similar to those of other known stick–slip systems, and thus might be of the same origin. To do so, we adapt a simple mechanical model widely used in seismology to study classic stick–slip beha...

Stabilizing stick-slip friction.

Even the most regular stick-slip frictional sliding is always stochastic, with irregularity in both the intervals between slip events and the sizes of the associated stress drops. Applying small-amplitude oscillations to the shear force, we show, experimentally and theoretically, that the stick-slip periods synchronize. We further show that this phase locking is related to the inhibition of slo...

Constraining fault constitutive behavior with slip heterogeneity

We explore features of rupture dynamics that (1) lead to slip heterogeneity in earthquake ruptures and (2) maintain conditions that permit slip heterogeneity in subsequent events. Our 3-D finite-element simulations of magnitude 7 events on a vertical, planar strike-slip fault show that the conditions that lead to slip heterogeneity remain in place after large events when the initial shear stres...
